LTC VC Perspectives from Silicon Valley with Chris Rust

5 March 2026

It was a pleasure to welcome back Chris Rust to London for his annual conversation with LTC members. Chris shared insights from more than two decades at the forefront of venture investing and Silicon Valley startups.

Given his deep technology background and experience at Clear Ventures, much of the discussion focused on the evolving AI landscape and where investors are seeing the most compelling opportunities.

One theme that stood out was how AI may begin to reshape the traditional SaaS model. As automation and agentic systems advance, established software pricing and delivery structures could face increasing pressure. In contrast, the infrastructure layer powering AI – particularly compute, chips and memory – may capture a growing share of the value created across the technology stack.

We also explored the opportunities and uncertainties surrounding #agentic AI, including questions around reliability, scalability and the timeline for mass adoption.

Importantly, Chris emphasised that AI should be viewed as additive rather than substitutive – a technology that enhances human productivity and capability rather than replacing it.

Finally, we touched on venture market dynamics and the growing role of #secondaries. With IPO markets slowing, secondary transactions are becoming an important source of liquidity and present significant opportunities for investors.

The value of your investment may go down as well as up and, therefore, your capital is at risk. Investments in venture capital funds and projects are particularly risky and you may lose all your invested capital so you will need to ensure that you are able to afford this loss.
